Why do you do what you do?

June 22nd, 2009

I wonder about myself. I mean, why would a guy get up this early every day and read and go to the office and write? It’s a little scary, to be honest with you. I just have to ask myself why I keep doing it.

It may be because I want to feel important. Writing and being read is a big deal. I fancy myself a writer because I have a blog site. Ridiculous, isn’t it? Writing this blog doesn’t make me a writer; taking classes under Dr. Matthews and Kate Stewart might but not writing this blog.

I’ve thought that maybe I do it out of obligation. I’m bad to keep doing something just because I don’t want anyone to think that I’m a quitter. Accountability is very important to me and I think that a few people read this every day. So, if I don’t get up and come to the church and write, someone will notice. I have to keep slugging it out.

You know what the truth is? The truth is that I want to do this. I want to come to the office and fill this empty space with words that could change someone’s life. I want to display the work that God is doing in my life and in the lives of those around me. I want to reveal truths in his Word and tell you about what he’s revealing to me. I do what I do because I want to. And so do you.

That’s true for all the good things that we do. It’s also true for all the wrong that we do and all the sin we commit. My dad used to say that if you are doing the wrong things because you want to then you need to get your “want to” fixed. So, how’s your “want to” this morning? I’m going to pray that God gives us all the “want to”, desire, to do His will and to throw everything we have in His direction; time, talent, and money.

Romans 7 talks all about the “want to” and it’s easy to see that sometimes what we want and what we do aren’t the same thing. Sometimes we desire to do God’s will but we just can’t make it happen; but Jesus can. “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God - through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7.24,25)

Father, help us to want you more than anything else. Give us passion for your name and your renown and compassion for others. Give us wisdom to know what to do and courage to act. We want to be like your Son and we want to follow Him. Thanks for giving us the desire. Give us more. Amen.
