Vera Lloyd

August 15th, 2009

There is a home for troubled teens in our town. The name of the place is the Vera Lloyd home. Many of the young people that live there are not allowed to go to public school either because they are too emotionally unstable or because they are too transitional. Those kids have no school activities; no athletics, no dances, no activities of any kind with students outside “the home”. That’s where our girls came in.

One of our young ladies asked for permission to sponsor a “prom” for the girls of Vera Lloyd. The administration graciously consented. Most of the young ladies had never been to a dance. Most had never been out to dinner at a resteraunt where they were served. Many had never had their hair or makeup done, professionally. Our young ladies provided all of the above along with prom dresses and shoes. Bryant High School donated the decorations and we provided the food. Our guys dressed up in black slacks and white shirts and waited on the tables. We brought in a professional photographer to take pictures. A little music and candlelight and the air was thick with magic.

I’ve never seen a group of girls any happier than the ladies of Vera Lloyd that night. They gave the guys a standing ovation when they served the salad. They cried when they walked down the runway and were announced, one by one. They laughed and sang. They had an evening of joy and celebration. It was one of the most wonderful evenings I’ve ever experienced.

I’ve aspired to be a blessing to people through many events but this was one of the few where I was certain I had accomplished the task. We hope to make the “Vera Lloyd Prom” a tradition. We’d love to have your help. If you have a prom dress or shoes or wish to make a donation or just want to help then you may drop off any donations at the MBSF Center on the campus of UAM in Monticello. Or you may contact us at mbsf@uamont.edu. We’d love for you to become a blessing to some girls who will never forget the love that you show them.
