The weight of words

September 12th, 2009

weight – 1 quantity weighing a definite amount 2 heaviness … 7 importance or consequence

If your doctor comes into the room and tells you that they’ve found something they don’t like on your x-ray, if your lawyer looks across the table and tells you that he believes you may have a problem, if your wife looks you straight in the eye and says, “We need to talk”, you understand that all these statements cause a heavy sinking feeling to settle in the pit of your stomach. These words carry weight because of how they are said and who it was that said them.

The chancellor of our university spoke at our Bible study this past Thursday night. He is the head administrator of our school. His words carry great weight with our students. Dr. Lassiter said that he knew that God was in control of his life. He said that he understood that he was responsible for the choices that he made but that God was ultimately in charge of his future. He said that the only reason he was still able to live and work at UAM was because the “good LORD was not through with him, yet.” Here is a man who is responsible for the academic future of hundreds of students and he says, in no uncertain terms, that he realizes that he is under the authority of God. “Essentially, I make the choices, but God is in control of my path.”

“The Most High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and sets over them anyone he wishes.”
(Daniel 5.21b)

It was wonderful to hear Dr. Lassiter give God glory. It was remarkable that a man in authority would do such a thing so openly and honestly. I praise God for putting Dr. Jack Lassiter over our institution. Dr. Lassiter trusts God.

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22.42)

Jesus is the creator and sustainer of the universe. “Nothing was made without him.” He is our redeemer. He is the Word made flesh. He trusts the Father.

What is worrying you this morning? Don’t you trust the Father?
