The Shirt

July 24th, 2009

It was on the ground at my feet. It was black with a white splotch in the middle. Someone said it had been in the mud for at least a week. It lay in the alley between the public toilets and the bookstore of Bogg Springs camp. Lots of people had walked over it and around it. It was filthy.

The shirt had some writing on the front. The grime hid the words. I took it to the cabin to wash it in the sink but it was too nasty. I started for the showers but I thought better of that idea. Then I remembered the hose by the worship center. I walked over, spread it out on the sidewalk, and began to spray it off. The water revealed the word “MOVE” in the middle of the splotch. Below the white spot were these words, “love God, love People – John 13.34,35″. I flipped the shirt over and sprayed again. I turned it inside out and finished the cleaning. Then I wrung it out, took off my shirt, and put the new-found one on. My friends thought I was crazy. “You don’t know where that’s been. You don’t know what it’s been used for. Remember where you found it?”

“I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
(Psalm 40.1,2)

I refuse to forget from whence I came. God lifted me up. God lifts me up. I will do the same for others.

I love the shirt. It reminds me of me.
