The Back Door

February 3rd, 2009

The music poured over the cinderblock wall and out into the alley. The two men stood and listened to the blue grass music as it wafted out over the cold, February air.

The back door of the club flew open and two of the patrons fell out into the alley. They recovered themselves and ambled off down the street and around the corner. As they disappeared an idea reappeared in one of the partners minds. He stepped forward, twisted the door knob to the left and pulled. Much to his surprise, the door opened and they were in.

The room was filled with people and smoke and bluegrass. The crowd was spellbound by the band and they swayed in unison to the fast licks of the musicians before them. The music was joyful and quick and it seemed to fill the entire space.

The two men stood and observed the room. The ceiling was blacked out and had drop lights. Three wood columns were spaced along the left side of the room. A small, raised, wooden platformed area ran the length of the far left wall. It was the only part of the room with chairs and tables. The floor was concrete and the walls were brick. There was nothing special about the place accept the music and the people and that’s the way everyone seemed to like it.

There were over two hundred people crammed into a space about the size of two large living rooms. Noone minded the closeness. It was actually part of the appeal. It was the coolest place to be in town.

That’s what I’m looking for. I want our building to be like that. I want it to be a place that people would want to be in so badly that they would sneak in the back door.

There should be nothing special about our new house accept the people and the music and the presence of God. I’m praying that the presence of the Lord will fill our place like the smoke and the music filled that one. I’m hoping that it will be thick enough to feel.

I hope that our students are so caught up in worship that they will not think of sitting down. Chairs shouldn’t be an issue. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see a group of students so enthralled with the LORD that they don’t care what’s on the floor or the ceiling or the walls but only what is in their hearts.

Then the LORD’s house will be The place to be on our campus and people will stand in the street and listen to the worship and wait for a chance to get in on it. Even if it means slipping in the back door.
