Every church that I’ve ever been a part of has had some kind of “potluck”. It’s an event that brings out mixed emotions from most folks. We’ve all been to some great ones and we’ve all been to some really bad ones. There are some people who bring out there very best cuisine and there are those who scrape out the bottom of their freezers. None of us want to get stuck at the back of the line at any potluck because you know that you are going to be picking at the leftovers.
What do you bring to the table? When it’s time for worship, when it’s time for sacrifice, when it’s time to witness, when it’s time to lend a helping hand, when it’s time to be supportive of a friend in need, when it’s time to rejoice, when it’s time to mourn, what will you bring? I have to ask myself if I’m breaking out the good stuff or if I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel.
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (II Cor. 9.6,7)
“I will not offer unto God anything that costs me nothing.” (II Sam. 24.24b)
“Whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matt. 25.40b)
Would it make any difference to you if I told you that ever morsel of food you served or every song that you offered up in worship or every dime you gave to charity was received by Jesus himself?
