I prayed with a good friend of mine yesterday. He was exhausted because he’d been praying a prayer that I asked him to pray. The prayer was working but it was working him to death. Here’s the prayer; “Father, we do not ask for you to bless what we are doing but we ask for wisdom to do only what you would bless.” Be careful, you may get what you ask for. My friend had been praying this for a while and he was receiving the reward of his request; he was being overrun by people in need and he was seeing no end in sight. So, I prayed with him. I asked God to give us wisdom to know when to what and how to do it. I asked Him to continue to give us opportunities to be used in his Kingdom work. I was praying for my friend, of course. God answered me.
I left the university campus and drove to my daughter’s house. I worked around there for about an hour and then I went to my home to clean-up and prepare for a wedding rehearsal. That’s when I got the phone call. It was a young friend of mine who had just recently returned from a drug rehab center. He’d had a relapse and wanted immediate help. I was just about to begin the rehearsal but I got him a phone number and told him I’d call him right back. I hung up with him and called his parent. She knew about it and was trying to find another rehab center for him to try. I gave her the same number and told her I’d call her right back. And that’s when the rehearsal began.
I left my phone on and walked the kids through the motions of the ceremony. We were at a stoppage when the parent called. She couldn’t find her son and he wouldn’t answer his phone. I reassured her that he was on his way home, hung-up with her, and called him. He answered and said he was in route to the house. I asked if he was still using the drug. He said he had been but he wasn’t now. I begged him to stop the car but he said he was fine to drive and he needed to get help. He’d made the phone call and the head of the rehab center had assured him of a spot if he could get there tonight. I hung-up with him and the rehearsal resumed.
We walked through the ceremony one more time. Everyone was satisfied that we were sufficiently prepared and we adjourned for dinner. The parent called me again. He had made it home. She was packing his bag. I asked about the cost; $850. She said that the money didn’t matter, the child was worth whatever it would cost. I prayed with her over the phone and headed back to the wedding party. That’s when it occured to me; you got what you asked for. I was neck deep in the work of the Kingdom.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16.33)
