Loaves and Fish

February 19th, 2009

11.6 million people were unemployed in January in the United States. In Asia, Africa, and Latin America, well over 500 million people are living on just over $2 a day. 3 billion people in the world survive on less than $2 a day. One out of every eight children in the US goes to bed hungry every night. 1530 children, in the US, died from neglect or abuse in 2006. 80% of those who abuse children, in the US, are parents. 22% of all pregnancies, in the US, end in abortion. (3700 abortions per day) 93% of all abortions occur for social reasons. In the world, 1 child dies every 3 seconds from preventable causes.

I told you yesterday that you should pray. Some of you may have needed a list of things to pray about. Here is our list. What are we going to do about it?

I woke up this morning trying to find a way to convince you to send an offering to our campus ministry so that we could complete the project we have begun. We need everyone to give something so that noone has to give everything. But, when I started thinking about the money and about my problem I was confronted by my conscience.

What are we going to do? What are we doing now? There is so much pain in the world and so much need. I can’t ask you for help because there are far greater causes than this one that need your attention. I’m proud that you read this blog. I am complimented that you care about this ministry. I would be honored if you would send an offering but there are more important things going on than our building project.

When I look at the figures I am dumb-struck. The needs are so many and we are so few. What can we do? What did the kid with the loaves and the fish do? Was that kid crazy? What difference did he think he was going to make? There were over five thousand men that sat down to eat that afternoon. The gospel of John says that the boy had five SMALL barley loaves and two SMALL fish. The disciples must have thought this was a joke. Andrew, Peter’s brother, even said, “how far will they go among so many?” Exactly, how far will they go among so many? But then they did the one thing that could change everything. They handed the loaves and the fish to Jesus. The NIV says, “He gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.” AS MUCH AS THEY WANTED.

What are we going to do? How can so few take care of so many? How will what we have ever be enough? We have to put what we have in the hands of the one who can make it enough. Give what you have to Jesus. Give all you have to Jesus. Jesus can make it enough. Jesus will make it enough.

Here are some places that you can take your “loaves and fish”; Compassion.com, Purewaterpoject.org, Bread.org. I believe that these people are the hands and feet of Jesus. I highly recommend them to you. May God bless us with more that we might give more. May God bless what we give and make it enough.
