I’m trying to write a blog this morning and the whole world is against it. I started my quest in the basement of the house. I found my laptop up stairs, carried it down to the basement, plugged it in and punched the off/on switch. Nothing happened. I checked the plug. I checked the power supply. I punched the switch several times. Nothing happened so I gathered my dictionaries and my Bibles and I headed for the church.
That’s when I remembered that some of the boys had my keys. They had to lock-up the Red Barn last night for me because I was making an emergency hospital visit with Bro. Chad at about 10pm. So, I thought I’d just walk out to the truck and see if they happened to bring them by and leave them for me. College students aren’t usually that thoughtful but my guys are not your usual college students. The keys were in the drivers seat of the Four Runner.
I went back into the house, gathered my stuff, and headed out to the church. I made it with plenty of time to spare, walked into the secretaries office and booted up the computer. I sat down to get on line and there was a notice on the screen that a device that was in the USB port was not communicating properly with the PC on which I was working. No problem, I hit OK twice and I was on my way.
That’s when it really started to swarm. It seems that this computer is having a slight meltdown over the USB port. It’s notifying me ever minute of this problem. I decided to unplug the two cords that were plugged into the USB ports. That would do it, don’t you think? Wrong answer. I replugged them securely. That didn’t do it. I traced the lines and made sure that the devices were turned on. No luck. I stopped all functions except what I was doing. Still no luck.
Writing, for me, is about flow. I get into a train of thought and the words just write themselves. Not today. Every sentence that I have written has been interrupted at least once by the notice that the devices in the USB ports are still not working and I need to choose another C2424 device or reinstall WorkCentre C2424 software. Fat chance. I have no idea what any of that means. I know how to turn this computer on, access the internet, and reach this website. That is the whole of my skills when it comes to computers.
Isn’t that just like life? You learn the game and then all the rules change. I’m writing this paragraph uninterrupted. Somehow I managed to minimize the notification about the communication error and everything seems to be going smoothly. Go figure. Read fast because this may mean that the computer is about to self-destruct. I have no idea what I’m doing.
I’m just telling you that life is more unpredictable than a computer glitch. “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” (Pr. 27.1) I can never tell what might spring up in front of me or spring on me. The one sure thing about life is that it will change, I we have to come to grips with that. But there is hope because the God we follow never changes. “I the Lord do not change.” (Malachi.3.6a) “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Heb. 13.8)
Everything around us is as unstable as the weather and just as unpredictable but our God is faithful and “God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.” (I Cor. 1.9) “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Heb. 10.23) You’re life may be spinning wildly but it is never spinning out of God’s control. And by the way, if you know anything about USB ports and C2424 devices would you give me a call.
