It was a simple trip down a small, rural highway. The road was curvy and the surface was a little wet. The guys and I were laughing and playing twenty questions. We were having a blast. The hill we topped was a bit steeper than we knew and the curve was sharper than I anticipated. I hit the breaks to slow us down and the trailer brakes locked up and we started to slide. The van was being whipped from side to side by the skidding trailer. By the time we got stopped we had hit both sides of the road and blown one trailer tire. It happens fast.
Life is like that. It happens fast. Kids grow up. The doctor calls with bad news. The stock market falls. Gas prices rise. Hurricanes strike. Cars skid on wet pavemen. It happens fast. How do you prepare for such moments? Can you prepare for them?
I believe it’s impossible to anticipate life. You can’t get ready for all that life will throw at you. We can’t possibly know what is in store for us, but God knows. God knows and God is in control. So I must trust Him with my future and deal with the present. I must live in this moment and trust Him for the next.
I cannot fly an airplane. I do, however, tend to worry a little when I climb on one. I get a little jumpy when the turbulence starts. I watch the faces of the flight attendants to see if they get worried. The bottom line is this; no matter how badly I may want to have some control over my flight I just can’t. I can’t fly the plane so I must trust the pilot. It’s the same in my life. The difference is that I’ve never met any of those pilots. The goal of my life is to get to know my Pilot better so I can trust him more because trouble always comes and it happens fast.
