A storm came through town last night. It wasn’t a terrible storm. It dropped a few limbs and poured out a few inches of rain. It passed in the night without leaving much damage in its’ wake. The town weathered the storm.
Some life storms are like that. We face some hardships and inconveniences. They frustrate us and cause us to “lose our religion” from time to time. Rude waiters, long lines at the check-out counter, longer lines at fast food restaurants, children that won’t mind, parents that don’t listen. We’ve all been there. These storms aren’t terrible. They ding us up a bit and leave.
But there are other storms. Storms that come quickly; unannounced and violent. They shake us to the core of our existence. Storms like cancer, betrayal, divorce, bankruptcy, the death of a loved one. These storms come without warning and they ravage our minds and our souls. They sweep our lives clean of every pretense and reveal the very foundations of our existence.
When a hurricane moves over an area, there is no time to prepare your foundation. The only thing you can do is board up your windows and doors and wait for the storm to hit. You cannot move the house. The worth of the foundation will reveal itself in the wake of the storm. If you live in an area that tends to have such storms it would be wise to be most sure of the foundation that you build upon.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
Matthew 7.24,25
The storms are coming. What have you built your life upon?
