“Giving the people what they want can wear at a mans’ soul.” annonymous

I did my best to help a young man change his ways. I helped him get some work. I helped him with some money. I believed in him. I encouraged him everytime I saw him. He was arrested last week for attempted armed robbery and he sits in jail awaiting a $100,000 bond.

I got two phone calls yesterday. The first call was from a lawyer who wanted me to be a character witness for a former student. I had to tell the truth about the students’ character. I couldn’t help them. My services were not required because I couldn’t say what they wanted to hear. The second call was about the integrity of a pastor. The church search committee wanted to know what I knew. I told them as little as possible but did not withhold any truth. It wasn’t what they wanted to hear. My services were not appreciated.

Yesterday I picked up Cody for church. He had a great time. After worship we got some food at Taco Bell and headed for his house but he assured me that he was going to need a place to stay because noone was going to be home. He was right. So I stayed up with the little guy ’til four this morning. He was so excited that he couldn’t sleep. He got up and cleaned up about 11am and we got brunch and his grandma came by and picked him up. I had to send him back home.

The word that’s stuck in my head is “enough”. I’ve had enough. I’ve seen enough. I’ve said enough. Enough is enough and this is enough.

Do you ever wonder if Jesus looks on us and, with tears in his eyes, he cries out “Enough!” He did once. He cried it out from a cross on a lonely hill outside of Jerusalem. “Tatelestai!” “It is finished!” “Enough!”

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his won love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5.6-8)

Jesus is always more than enough and he never tires of giving it. God help me; I need more than enough.
