“What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4.14b
Baseball is a lot like life. You are supposed to get to play 9 innings unless you are tied at the end of the 9 and then you go to extra innings. Those extra innings continue until the game is settled. Some last long into the night. It’s been recorded that some games have lasted into the wee hours of the next morning.
Once you are in the game, you cannot come out and reenter. You are in until you get “pulled” and then you are out. Some players get taken out before the game is over. So, while you are on the field, you should play as hard as you can because you never know when you may be coming out. Sort of like life.
In baseball, as in life, there is one certainty; your time on the field will end. You never know when it is coming but you can be certain that it is coming. Death is like that. It is as certain and as sure as the sun rise. Every day you live is one day closer to the day you leave. So do everything you can before you get “pulled”. “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” (John 9.4)
In life, as in baseball, there is only one thing that you can control; how you play. You are still on the field. The game isn’t over. Play it out.
