Apathy – 1 lack of emotion 2 lack of interest; indifference, listlessness
Yesterday I went fishing on the Little Red River. It’s one of my favorite trout streams. I fished there for about three hours. During those three hours I must have cast my line out more than a thousand times. I just kept throwing by bait into the water and waiting for a fish to bite. I fished about thirty yards of that river. I stayed within that area the whole time. I caught one fish. I had two guys with me. They fished the same area. They caught two fish each. What do you think was the problem?
We had the right back. We had the correct rigging. Our presentation of the bait was just as it should have been. I think that the problem might have been that we were fishing an area that was not going to produce many fish.
Jesus told the disciples to push out to deeper water and prepare their nets for a catch. He was taking them to new waters where the fish were. How long has it been since you went into a new area with the gospel? Are you willing to put yourself in position to minister to unreached people? Will you “let down your net” in deeper water.
The term “list” means to sway from side to side as in a boat that is tossed by waves in the ocean. To be “listless” would indicate that your vessel is sitting in dead, calm waters or it is tied to the dock. To be apathetic is to be “listless”. It’s time for us to let the boat rock.
